The Mississippi Culture, Monks Mound in Cahokia Mounds Site, Illinois right here in North America is one of the United States largest pyramid like structure north of Mesoamerica. The Mississippi culture was a group of people who stated a cultural, religious and economic centre all the way back in the 9th-13th century. The Mississippi culture had extended through the Mississippi Valley and all the way to southeastern side of the United States. In these communities were monk mounts. The monk mounds were some of the largest prehistoric structure here in the United States. These mounds covered up to 1,000 ft in length, 700 ft in width and stands at 100 ft in height. Mounds like this were sometimes used for builds and sometimes they were used to bury the dead. The North American burial mounds are quite similar to that of the Korean burial mounds. However, unlike the Korean burial mounds where usually only one person is buried. In the monks mounds there kind of like today's graveyards, but vertical. In these mounds severely people were buried in it. Once all the spots were taken up they would add another layer on top and continue burying the deceased. There have been thousands of burial mounds in the United States. However, many of the burial mounds have been destroyed by farming, pot hunting, amateur or even professional archaeologists, road being built and construction. But not all of the United States burial mounds are gone. Some can still be found in Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio along river valleys. Out of all the other burials in this exhibition this is one of the largest out their. I find these mounds to be quite amazing and didn’t even knew they excised until this exhibition.
